TIBET- Mountain Biking in the Roof of the world (17 days)
You need to take a flight to Lhasa from Kathmandu, before you start rolling down the trail. After enjoying theMountain Biking in Tibet scenic trans-Himalayan flight, you can bike around the historic Lhasa valley as you stop there a few days to acclimatize with the highland desert climate. The great Potala palace, the sacred Jokhang Temple, the market around Barkor and the rich Tibetan architecture easily entice you.
Itinerary
Day 01 You reach Lhasa by a trans-Himalayan flight from Kathmandu. You cross the main Himalayan Range before hovering over the massive Tibetan plateau savoring the breathtaking view of the majestic mountain range. The bird's eye view of Mount Everest and other peaks like Langtang (7100m), Gauri Shankar (7245m), Melungtse (7100m), Xixapangma (8012m), Cho Oyu (8201m), Lhotse (8516m), and Makalu (8463m), among others, is truly spectacular. Lhasa Gonggar Airport is 96km away from downtown Lhasa. For the hotel transfer from the airport you can either choose to bike or drive on a vehicle. The rest of the day is for acclimatization at the high altitude.
Day 02-03 These two days you will spend for sight seeing in Lhasa. You will visit Potala Palace, Sera Monastery, Norbulinka, Drepung Monastery, Jorkhang Temple & Barkhor street and lodge overnight at the Hotel.
Day 04 Lhasa to Khamba - La base camp (4050 m) 70km (5/6 hrs) & O/N Camp.
We head out on fairly good roads to our first campsite near the foot of Khamba-la. (4970 m)
Day 05 Khamba-la base Camp - Namkartse (4300 m), 70km (6/7 hrs) & O/N camp
Bike over the Khambala pass (4970m) and descend towards lunch at the beautiful Yamdrok Lake. An afternoon biking brings us to our camp just outside of Namkartse.
Day 06 Namkartse – Ralung Monastery (4550m) 58kms (4/5hrs) & O/N Camp.
Bike over the Karo-la (5045), then passing through many colorful villages to camp near the Simi-la (4,330m).
Day 07 Ralungla Monastetry – Gyantse (3950m) 63kms (3/4hrs) & O/N Hotel.
Today you will cross the Simi-la pass (4330m, 27.7 km) and bike along the gentle slope leading to Gyantse town in the morning and passing beautiful Tibetan villages to reach an artificial lake constructed to provide hydro-electric power. After lunch, you will visit Palkor Chode and Kumbum stupa in the historical town of Gyantse.
Day 08 Gyantse - Shigatse (3900m) 90kms (7/8hrs) & O/N Hotel
Today, you will traverse on paved and flat leveled road through a picturesque valley full of agricultural fields and traditional water mills during biking upto Shigatse; Tibet 's 2nd biggest city in the province of Tsang. Afternoon visit Tashilhumpo Monastery complex, ruined fortress and market place in Shigatse This is the day in which you are going to visit to Tashilhunpo Monastery and the different places of Shigatse. You can visit the ruines monasteries and during visit you can explore the city and people on your own. It is the second largest city.
Day 09 Shigatse – Tso La base Camp (4065m) 105kms (7/8hrs) & O/N Camp
We follow the paved road slightly uphill out of the city, but then across there we can see mostly flat region until we cross a small pass (4010m) from where a new landscape starts. Then we bike for the night camp below the Tso-la (4500m) biking along the Ra Chu River.
Day 10 Tso La base Camp - Gyatso-La base Camp (4000m) 59kms (4/5hrs) & O/N camp
Today our destination will be Gyatso-La base camp. During the biking of 4/5 hrs we can enjoy the amazing 8km downhill biking before a flat section reaches that is Lhazi. By skipping Lhatse town we move ahead towards our destination leaving the Lhazi.
Day 11 Gyatso la base – Pangla base camp (4500m) 50km (4Hrs of bike) & O/N camp
Bike over the highest pass of this trip at Gyatso-la 5220m and descent towards Xegar, then continue to Pangla pass (5120m) from here a suburb panorama from Makalu to Shishapangma can be seen from this very spo, Camping before Pangla pass.
Day 12 Pangla base camp - Tashi Village ( Rongbuk Monastery) (4920m) 80.km (7hrs of bike) & O/N camp
We reach the Rongbuck Base Camp, starting off beside the Rong chu river with views of Everest ahead. Our camp site after the village of Tashi.
Day 13 Excursion to Everest Base Camp 8km & O/N camp
Today, you will go on an excursion to the Everest Base Camp, which is about 8 km away from your campsite. You have to cover those last kilometers on horseback as the rules changed in 2004 and no vehicles or bikes are allowed to Base Camp. You will return to the same camp following a different route after sightseeing around the Everest Base Camp and Qomolongma Wildlife Reserve
Day 14 Biking back to Tingri (5100m) 80km (6hrs) O/N Camp
After the excursion and spending the day in base camp today we will bike back to the Tingri to the main road leaving the Rongbuk monastery and the Everest behind. We definitely would double the spirit after visiting the base camp of "Top of the World" and be ready for another ride to Tingri. We will bike 70km back the same track around 4/5 hrs.
Day 15 Tingri - Lalungla base camp (4570m) 71km (5/6hrs of bike) & O/N camp
The road today is mostly even. Towards the end of the day, you will bike along gentle slope lined with ruins of fortresses built during the Nepal - Tibet war in 1856 AD. The views along the way, of villages with Tibetans in typical dress and beautiful landscapes, can be viewed during biking.
Day 16 Lalung-la base camp-Lalungla pass (5124m)- Nylam (3750m) 82km (6/7hrs) O/N Camp
Today the bike ride takes to the Lalung-la pass (5124m) that offers spectacular view of Gaurishankar, Dorje Lhakpa, Shishapangma and Langtang. From here another 6/7 hours bike bring us to our camp near Nylam. During the biking we can see the Milarepa's cave and Pelgye Ling monastery before we reach Nyalam.
Day 17 Nyalam - Zhangmu 35km then 7km to friendship bridge (Nepal-Tibet Border)
This is the last day of the biking. Today, you will bike 40km along a downhill slope. You will stop at Zangmu for custom formalities and continue biking up to the Friendship highway, that separates Nepal and Tibet. After entering Sunkoshi valley, you can choose to complete the remaining journey to Kathmandu either biking or on a vehicle. Kathmandu is 114 km from the border.
