TIBET- Mountain Biking in the Roof of the world (14 days)
You need to take a flight to Lhasa from Kathmandu, before you start rolling down the trail. After enjoying theMountain Biking in Tibet scenic trans-Himalayan flight, you can bike around the historic Lhasa valley as you stop there a few days to acclimatize with the highland desert climate. The great Potala palace, the sacred Jokhang Temple, the market around Barkor and the rich Tibetan architecture easily entice you.
Itinerary
Day 01 Katmandou-Lhasa: You reach Lhasa by a trans-Himalayan flight from Kathmandu. You cross the main Himalayan Range before hovering over the massive Tibetan plateau savoring the breathtaking view of the majestic mountain range. The bird's eye view of Mount Everest and other peaks like Langtang (7100m), Gauri Shankar (7245m), Melungtse (7100m), Xixapangma (8012m), Cho Oyu (8201m), Lhotse (8516m), and Makalu (8463m), among others, is truly spectacular. Your plane will be landed at Lhasa Gonggar Airport (96km from the main city) at 13:40pm Chinese time. Transfer to Lhasa and check in. Afternoon free for acclimatization & O/N Hotel
Day 02-03 These two days you will spend for sight seeing in Lhasa. You will visit Potala Palace, Sera Monastery, Norbulinka, Drepung Monastery, Jorkhang Temple & Barkhor street and lodge overnight at the Hotel.
Day 04 Lhasa – Namkartze (4300m): 140 kms & O/N Camp.
Today, you will start biking. You will cover 140 kms in about 10 - 11hrs depending on your stamina. If can not complete journey you can completing the remaining journey of the day on a vehicle. The road is fairly level and does not have much uphill climbs up to Ganda village then biking uphill over the Khamba-la (4970m) pass. After crossing the pass you will descend to Yamdrok Tso river. You can get a good view of the Yamdrok Tso in your downhill journey. You will have lunch at the bank of Yamdrok Tso. In the afternoon, you will bike briefly to the campsite just on the suburbs of the Yamdrok Tso
Day 05 Nagartze – Karo La (5045m) – Ralung Monastery (4550m): 58 kms & O/N Camp. You bike to cross the Karo la pass in the morning and bike past colorful villages to the campsite in the afternoon.
Day 06 Ralung Monastery – Gyantse (3950m): 63kms & O/N Hotel.
You will cross the Simi-la pass and bike along the gentle slope leading to Gyantse town in the morning. After lunch, you will visit Palkor Chode and Kumbum stupa in the historical town of Gyantse.
Day 07 Gyantse – Shigatse (3900m): 90 kms & O/N Hotel
Today, you will traverse on a level road through a picturesque valley full of agricultural fields and traditional water mills. You will also visit the famous Tashilhunpo Monastery complex, ruined fortresses and market place in Shigatse.
Day 08 Shigatse – Xegar (3900m): 244kms & O/N Camp
This is the long journey, so you can complete the journey on a vehicle. You will cross some passes during this journey such as Tso la pass (4500m), Yalung La pass and the Gyatso-la (5220m) which is highest pass in this trip.
Day 09 Xegar – Rongbuk Monastery (4920m): 60kms & O/N Camp.
From Xegar you leave the highway and bike along a rocky terrain and cross Pang la pass (5200m). You will arrive at Rongbuk Monastery late afternoon.
Day 10 Excursion to Everest Base Camp: O/N camp
Today, you will go on an excursion to the Everest Base Camp, which is about 8 km away from your campsite. You will return to the same camp following a different route after sightseeing around the Everest Base Camp and Qomolongma Wildlife Reserve.
Day 11 Rongbuk – Tingri (4200m): 96kms & O/N Camp
This will be a long day. You will cross the Pang la pass (5200m) and bike downhill, with occasional upward slopes towards the campsite at Tingri.
Day 12 Tingri – Sumo (4400m): 80 kms & O/N Camp
The road today is mostly even. Towards the end of the day, you will bike along gentle slope lined with ruins of fortresses built during the Nepal - Tibet war in 1856 AD.
Day 13 Sumo – Nyalam (3750m): 83Kms & O/N Camp or Lodge
Today, you will cross two high passes - The Lalunga la (5050m) & Nyalamu-la pass (3800m). You will visit Melaripa’s Cave and see Mount Gaurishankar (7193m), Dorje Lakpa ( 6975m), and Langtang Ri (7246m), among others, on the way.
Day 14 Nyalam – Zangmu – Kathmandu
Today, you will bike 40km along a downhill slope. You will stop at Zangmu for custom formalities and continue biking up to the Friendship highway, that separates Nepal and Tibet. After entering Sunkoshi valley, you can choose to complete the remaining journey to Kathmandu either biking or on a vehicle. Kathmandu is 114 km from the border
